Fire Mountains / פֿײַער איופן בערג / fayer oyfn berg

In ancient times on Rosh Chodesh, a fire would be made on a mountain top. This fire would signal the beginning of the month, and when others saw it, they too would light a fire on a mountain. The fires on the mountain tops connected people in counting time.

This time of darkness: moon time, access to the reptilian mind on the surface.
This time of transmutation, morphing, change: ignition of our soul fires.

I’m so grateful to Rep Ilhan Omar. For her strength and vision, words and calling.

I have so much to learn from the dignity and strength of leaders like Rep Ilhan Omar, Dr Marc Lamont Hill, Dr Angela Davis and Rep Rashida Tlaib and all other Black and Muslim leaders who are calling out institutions such as AIPAC who condone human rights abuses in Palestine.

The backlash they are experiencing is Islamaphobic and racist. .

Our struggles are completely woven and as Jews we have the opportunity to align ourselves. To understand the difference between anti semitism and hate. Rep Ilhan Omar is not anti semetic. You know who is? Our president, Mike Pence, David Duke, and yes Benjamin Netanyahu. You can be a Jew and be anti semetic. You can be violent towards Jews and other Semetic people.

This MLK day I am focusing on reparations. One way to bind ourselves up in the struggle (still potent as ever) of Coretta Scott King her husband. I have heard many black people ask for this, thank you for asking and bringing it to the front. Economic reparations..

As much as our culture fails to recognize this, it’s not just black activists that lead the struggle but also those creating essential art and culture we depend on for our inspiration, livelihoods and emotional well being. Art creates life, life creates art. Where would we be without the scholarship, art, music, healing arts, dance, comedy and performance of black people? Literally we all would be dead. I know it’s a funny way to think abt it but it’s true, if you really meditate on that.

Give reparations today (and any day) if you are white and can. You know who moves you, what artists and organizations. I don’t say this to lift myself up but because I hope it will be an inspiration for someone else to do the same. A couple brilliant healers I am focusing on giving to right now (u can too): .

Nathan Phillips, thank you for your huge generosity, in sharing prayers and vision in the face of hatred. Nathan Phillips is an Indigenous elder (Omaha and Vietnam vet) who was faced with blatant hatred during the Indigenous People’s March on Friday. . “I heard them say ‘Build that wall! Build that wall!’ You know this is Indigenous land. You know we’re not supposed to have walls here. We never did. Before anybody else came here we never had walls. We never had a prison.
We always took care of our elders, we took care of our children. We always provided for them. We taught them right from wrong..

I wish I could see that mass of young men put that energy into making this country really great.”

As the former director of Native Youth Alliance, please consider making a contribution towards this positive organization that is doing the opposite of what the white youth did on Friday. I’m in awe of this man who shared his heart so beautifully in the face of violence (and we all know these youth get these ideas from being raised by hateful white parenting and hateful racist schools). My heart is with Indigenous people grieving. I owe my life to those Indigenous to this land who have kept us all alive through the tending of this land. .
